Week 7: The Fix

"Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated." -Confucius

What we learned this week:

It is odd not to write about learning circles. I still have the book borrowed from the U of R library and am hesitant to part ways with it. To be completely candid, I don't believe there is much to be read from my posts now without such a massive segment. You may just get a lot more rambling. I sometimes forget what we learned on Wednesday nights after procrastinating on these blog posts. My usual routine would be to check the agenda and choose what really stood out to me. This week's agenda is the shortest we've had so far if I'm not mistaken. I briefly glanced at it before class and told my dad that we might be let out earlier tonight. I was spectacularly wrong. I didn't mind, and it passed by pretty quickly.

We did a Poll Guru at the beginning, and it was great to touch base with everyone after the break. I remember one of the questions was about the quality of our ePortfolios. After the first week where I felt like I was doused with cold water, I quickly remedied the quality of my blog posts. I didn't check the success criteria before, but I have since then. I was previously satisfied with my posts, but after seeing the feedback over the break.... Once you've hit purple, you don't wanna see green. Although we've discussed that we make learning mistakes, I still want to improve.

As a student...

If I'm being honest, I felt like the culture and cultural inclusion we learned about today was a little out of place. I racked my brain, trying to recall what we've discussed in this course so far, and didn't find a link to this topic besides the survey a few weeks back. Not that I minded learning about cultural inclusion, I definitely enjoyed our breakout activity too. It just felt odd to me in the midst of all these assessment strategies. I tried connecting it to assessment, but I'm struggling.

As a future teacher...

We did an activity on the 15 fixes to education, which was about using better methods/approaches when it comes to assessment. I thought that was a really neat paper. Some of the things were surprising to me like the "don't rely on the mean." A lot of them were interesting to read, and I think these fixes are actually great for guidance. I might make a simple list of these and keep it for myself.

I know that from my blog title, it seems like my symbol is some kind of slang. I'm here to clarify that it is not. It's very simple actually. I just took the word "fix" from the 15 fixes activity.

We also looked at the statistics from PISA and PCAP. I didn't know that we could view these (or that they were accessible to us at all). It was really cool to see the results. Seeing the differences between our percentiles and other provinces/countries made me interested in research. What is different about the curriculums?

Evidence of learning

I am a competitive person when it comes to puzzles.
